How Often Do You Need to Change Your Air Filter?
Keeping your HVAC system functioning properly and efficiently is vital to keeping your Jacksonville, Florida, home at a comfortable temperature all year long. To make sure your HVAC system is working at an optimal level, you should change your air filter regularly. The question is, how often do you really need to do so?
General Requirements
On average, you should change your air filter every one to three months. If conditions in or around your home cause IAQ issues, you will need to replace your air filter more frequently. For example, persons who live in or around dusty conditions should check the filter regularly. How often you change your filter will also depend on the type. Filters with high MERV (minimum efficiency reporting value) are of better quality and last longer.
The Health of Occupants
If anyone in your home suffers from asthma or allergies, you will need to replace your filter more often. People with respiratory illnesses are more sensitive to airborne particles. For those with chronic health problems, it’s a good idea to invest in a high-quality air filter. At a minimum, basic filters catch only some or primarily large particles. Top-rated filters can trap minute particles and even tobacco smoke and keep them out of your indoor air.
A Home With Pets
Pets can leave a lot behind, including dander and pet hair. These contaminants will then circulate through your HVAC system and your home. When you have pets, you might find that the filter gets dirty quickly. Make it a habit to check your air filter frequently—even if it has a high MERV rating. Set reminders to help you stay on top of this important task.
